A message from the mayor – March 30, 2020

Dear citizens:
It is not necessary to repeat that our daily lives have not been the same since the March Break only 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately, it seems like ages ago. Like the Premier of Quebec, I would also like to thank all Quebec citizens and especially you, the residents of New Richmond, for strictly following the rigorous measures imposed by the Government. I have spoken with numerous members of the business community and many citizens over the past few days and I have not observed any signs of panic. In fact, more often than not, during these conversations I have observed a genuine spirit of optimism for the future. A large number of the persons with whom I spoke repeated that we are in the best place to be to get through this world crisis . I am completely in agreement, the present situation makes us appreciate our Quebec society, and the services offered to everyone, even more.

The Town’s efforts are currently focused on essential services for the entire community. We are functioning with reduced staff and were reluctantly forced to lay off several employees. However, this situation will not stop us for preparing for life after COVID-19, because things will eventually return to normal and New Richmond will be ready, as always, to offer you a dynamic and animated community.

By means of numerous conference calls and other daily meetings concerning the management of this crisis, I am working hard as Mayor and Warden (Préfet) along with my colleagues to set up special measures for local businesses that are severely affected. Firstly, the MRC of Bonaventure will be acting as a mediator with its clients and will be making certain announcements shortly. In addition, we are in constant contact with other regional partners in order to set up certain regional measures that will be added to the measures set up by Quebec and Ottawa. Together we will get through this difficult situation.

The Municipal Council decided on March 23, 2020 that no interest or penalties will be applied on late payments of municipal taxes for the moment. Moreover, you will find pertinent information about this decision below.

At this time, I only have one request for you: strictly follow governmental directives and « stay at home » , except in the case of emergency. If you wish to offer your services to help, please communicate with pharmacies and grocery stores. They have the most pressing needs at the current time or visit jebenevole.ca.
Until next time,

Éric Dubé
